(Raphanus sativus) A.k.a. Munchener Bier Radish. The authentic "German Beer" radish. A favorite snack radish in Germany. Crisp white flesh, oval shaped radishes are highly prized. An heirloom from the Bavarian region of Germany. 4-inch white roots have a pungent, crisp flesh that is sliced onto bread or served with pretzels. It also produces tender seed pods that are tasty pickled or added to salads. Grows very large, very quickly. Sliced thin and salted, they go well with beer. To reduce the heat, peel off the outer layer of skin. Cut into thin slices and eat as a delicious snack or grate some for adding to dips and salads. HOW TO GROW: Since German Munchener Bier are winter radishes, they should be planted about two months before the first expected fall frost. Plant them in very rich, deeply worked up soil about 1/2" deep and 1" apart; later, thin the seedlings 4-6" apart. Can be planted in summer for fall harvest. *** **SOIL Temperature for Germination: 50-70F. **Plant Spacing : 5", Row Spacing : 6-8". **Planting Depth: 1/4" **Hardiness: Zones 4-9 **Sun Requirement: Full Sun / Part Shade. **Days to Germination: 7-14 days **Germination Rate: 95%.

  • SOIL Temperature for Germination: 50-80F. Planting Depth : 1/4". Planting Time: Cool Season. Sowing Method: Direct Sow. Plant Spacing : 2-3", Row Spacing : 5-6". Radishes are a cool season crop and are quick to mature. These heirloom seeds can be planted in spring or fall.
  • Due to the small size of these seeds and vegetables, most people will use a furrow technique when planting. Sow in shallow furrow and cover with 1/4" of sifted compost or light sand.
  • Later after the first few true leaves appear, it is best to then thin to final spacing. Remember larger spacing will result in larger heirloom radishes but will take longer to mature.
  • Radishes do well with consistently moist soil and the addition of organic matter such as compost. Do not allow the soil to dry out, but also avoid over watering as this can cause splitting.
